SHIKON INTERNATIONAL OPEN 2009

REPORT ON THE 1ST SHIKON INTERNATIONAL KARATE

OPEN CHAMPIONSHIPS

Grundy Park leisure Centre ,Cheshunt was the venue for the 1st Shikon International Open.

Formerly a member of EKGB and Karate England 05  Shikon  remains an active member

of the newly reformed Karate England which contains so many other famous karate names.

The event had been welcomed by the World Union of Karate Federations as the first ever event sanctioned by them in England ,and we were honoured to have athletes from three Romanian clubs forming a squad led by Mr Liviu Crisan the General Secretary of the WUKF.

Also attending were members from the Ulster Karate Federation (Mr Columba McLoughlin)

and  Carnalea Karate   (Mr David Brashaw)  along with Mr J Lipinski from the School of

Masters (Poland).

The event proved to be thoroughly enjoyable being run in three phases .

Many thanks go to the officials from FEKO ,UMA ,UKF , HAK  and of course Shikon for keeping the event to time table.

The standard was good with numerous former EKGB and current Karate England national champions present and medals were presented not only by Mr Crisan but also by former Ladies World heavy weight Champion Patricia Duggin and  former Mens World Lightweight Champion Mr Abdu Shaher

First phase ,childrens Kata started at 9.45 am (fifteen minutes early) and finished at 12.30pm leaving thirty minutes to present all the medals and trophies before starting the second phase (childrens kumite) at twelve minutes past one o clock (twelve minutes late).

The final phase was cadets and adults which proved to be the busiest phase with over 180  taking part.

Hats off to the Romanian squad for their terrific haul of medals and good luck to them at the forthcoming World Championships in Odessa ,Ukraine.

The event also proved worthwhile for the British team members travelling to the Ukraine who used the tournament as a very useful warm up.

Dates for next years Shikon open will be published soon as will dates for other events including a team rotation event planned for the summer.

Anyone interested in entering a team for the rotation event please contact Ian Cuthbert on cuthbertshikon@aol.com .

Congratulations to the Shikon team of Trisha Jordan ,Julia Heenan ,James Howes ,Dean Tilley , Natalie Collins , Chris and Gwynn Foreman , Sonia Powell ,Rowie Briggs ,Lynn Austin ,Michael Cormack  ably led by Ian Cuthbert ,all of whom were essential to the days success.

Thanks also to our sponsors for their generous monies:-

2009 LONDON YOUTH GAMES

Crystal Palace was once again the venue for the Karate section of the Balfour Beatty London Youth Games . Its been some years since the event has been held there as the `Palace ` has been undergoing extensive refurbishment.  Now with new seating , cafeteria and numerous improvements in Sports facilities it was ready to deal with one of the biggest events in the London Karate calendar.

Despite efforts from the EKF to amazingly boycott the event , many EKF members ignored this stupidity  and turned up anyway.

Congratulations must go to the organiser Richard Bolton and his team  for presumably risking sanctions , exile and possible hang drawing and quartering for having the back bone to stick to their guns and continue to help run an event that , at the end of the day is simply a sporting event for London kids.

The karate event has long been the scene of victory for the East London boroughs  with  Havering , Redbridge , Barking & Dagenham and Tower Hamlets all having successful runs of wins.

This year was no exception.  In the boys section Redbridge narrowly pipped Havering by 2 points to take first place ,Waltham Forest with a strong but only half full squad took third.  Most of these three squads came from the ever strong Shikon clubs based in the various boroughs with the notable exception of Jason Plum from the KUGB who took two golds for Waltham Forest.

In the girls event the first two places were reversed with Havering romping home comfortably and Redbridge taking second.  Third place was taken by the excellent Richmond team.

Well done to Havering coaches Trisha Jordan and Richard Gregory , Redbridge coaches Ian Cuthbert and Maria Anonuevo  and Waltham Forest Coaches Sonia Powell and Ono Ogbekene.

Anyone interested in taking up karate in any of the above London Boroughs should contact either  Ian Cuthbert (07802 481187) or Trisha Jordan  (07812713925).

FOUR WAY TEAM MATCH IN SHEFFIELD

Well done to those who took part in the four way friendly at the Hillsborough Leisure

Centre ,Sheffield on Sun 10th May.

The four teams were Shikon ,SKU ,FEKO and BKO.

The Shikon squad was made up as follows:-

Mens Team :-   Dan Cuthbert (Capt)  , Jason Marquis ,Dan Thackray ,TomThackray

Leon Martin and Charlie Collins

Ladies Team :-  Ono Ogbekene (Capt) ,Ami Carrigan-Smith ,Shauna Carroll

Rebecca Soame and Mary Berwick

The ladies team romped home unbeaten and took first place in their round robin with

Captain Ono Ogbekene  looking a class above  and unloading an impressive array

of techniques.  Ami backed this up with her usual consistent point scoring.

New comers Shauna ,Rebecca and Mary all did them selves proud bearing in mind they

were only cadets.

The Mens team  almost started without a full five due to members arriving late

but cadet Charlie Collins stepped in and  fought twice winning one fight and narrowly

losing the other by half a point. Capt Dan Cuthbert went unbeaten through his matches

but the Mens team failed tobeat home side SKU  (losing 3-2) and had to settle for

second place.
